Looking Ahead
Southern Teams’ Week 15 Review: Key Trends to Watch
As the Southern teams wrap up their season, we take a closer look at the key trends that are shaping their campaigns. This week’s analysis focuses on the MACD trending indicators, providing valuable insights into which teams are genuinely improving versus those experiencing unsustainable momentum.
Offensive Trends to Highlight
Furman has seen an increase in its Shooting Percentage (SP) throughout the season, indicating they are becoming more effective from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line. This trend suggests that Furman is able to capitalize on missed shots as effectively versus stronger competition.
On the other hand, Mercer’s Opponent Shooting Percentage (Opponent SP%) has improved over the season, suggesting that their opponents are struggling to find their mark against them versus weaker teams.
Defensive Trends to Highlight
ETSU’s Defensive Rebounding Percentage (DRB%) has improved significantly throughout the season. This trend suggests they are becoming more effective at grabbing defensive boards and limiting second-chance opportunities for their opponents versus stronger competition.
In conclusion, these trends provide valuable insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each team. While some teams are struggling on offense, others are making significant strides on defense. As we move forward in the season, it will be interesting to see which teams can sustain their momentum and continue to improve.
Metrics Glossary
Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):
- eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
- TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
- OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
- FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
Other Metrics:
- Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
- Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
- MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
