Looking Ahead
Mid-American Conference Wrap-Up: Trends to Watch for Week 17
As the Mid-American Conference season continues, we examine key trends emerging from the data. Our analysis focuses on teams demonstrating genuine improvement versus those experiencing unsustainable momentum.
Offensive Trends
Akron’s rebounding prowess is a concern, with their Off Reb Pct trending down strongly. This decline in value indicates worsening performance in securing rebounds offensively. Conversely, Bowling Green has made strides in reducing turnovers, showcasing an improving trend. However, the Falcons’ struggle to grab defensive boards is evident in their low Def Reb Pct.
Buffalo’s offense has faced challenges due to a downward trend in Off Reb Pct. This decline suggests difficulties in securing rebounds and may impact their overall performance.
Defensive Trends
Ball State’s defense has improved significantly, as evidenced by the downtrend in Opp Shooting and uptrend in Def Reb Pct. However, a closer look reveals that Ball State’s Opp Shooting trending down strongly is actually a problem for the team.
The MACD momentum indicators will continue to be crucial in identifying which teams are genuinely improving versus those relying on fleeting momentum.
Key Takeaways
- Akron’s Off Reb Pct is trending down strongly, indicating worsening performance.
- Bowling Green has improved its turnover defense but worsened its ability to force turnovers.
- Ball State’s Opp Shooting trending down strongly indicates a problem for the team.
Metrics Glossary
Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):
- eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
- TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
- OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
- FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
Other Metrics:
- Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
- Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
- MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
