Looking Ahead

Patriot League Analysis: Week 17 Wrap-Up

As the Patriot League season continues, we’ve analyzed key trends to identify teams genuinely improving and those experiencing unsustainable momentum.

Offensive Trends to Highlight

  1. American University: Turnovers have decreased significantly this season (Season Avg: 0.147, Trend: Down). This improvement is a strong indicator of better team management and decision-making.
  2. Boston University: Opp Shooting has decreased this season (Season Avg: 0.54, Trend: Down), indicating a stronger defensive performance that limits opponents’ scoring chances.

On the other hand:

  1. Army: Turnovers have increased this season (Season Avg: 0.16, Trend: Up). This worsening trend could lead to more mistakes and easier scoring chances for opponents.
  2. Colgate: Opp Turnovers has decreased (Season Avg: 0.145, Trend: Down), indicating that the Raiders are doing a better job of forcing opponents into turnovers.

Defensive Trends to Highlight

  1. American University: Def Reb Pct has trended upward strongly (Season Avg: 0.72, Trend: Up). This improvement suggests that American is becoming more effective at grabbing defensive boards.
  2. Army: Army’s Def Reb Pct has increased (Season Avg: 0.74, Trend: Up), indicating a stronger ability to secure rebounds and limit opponents’ scoring chances.

On the other hand:

  1. Boston University: Off Reb Pct has declined (Season Avg: 0.256, Trend: Down), indicating a decrease in the team’s ability to secure rebounds.
  2. Colgate: Opp Off Reb Pct has increased (Season Avg: 0.323, Trend: Up), making it more challenging for opponents to secure rebounds and score.

These trends provide valuable insights into the teams’ performances and can help identify areas where improvement is needed or momentum might be unsustainable. We’ll continue to analyze these metrics in future articles.

Metrics Glossary

Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):

  • eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
  • TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
  • OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
  • FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.

Other Metrics:

  • Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
  • Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
  • MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
