Looking Ahead

Big West Teams Showcased in Week 15 Analysis

As the Big West season progresses, teams are being put to the test. A closer look at key offensive and defensive trends reveals which squads are making genuine strides and which might be experiencing unsustainable momentum.

Offensive Trends

CSU Fullerton’s turnover numbers have improved significantly this season, with a trend downward versus stronger competition (from 14.6 to 12.8). This decline suggests that the team is becoming more efficient in ball control, allowing them to maintain possession on offense. However, CSU Fullerton faces challenges with its offense rebounding percentage, which has decreased versus weaker competition.

CSU Northridge’s shooting has shown an increase in efficiency from the field versus stronger competition (72.2% to 75.6%). This trend suggests that the team is finding its mark more consistently. However, CSU Northridge also struggles to secure second-chance opportunities on offense, as their off-rebound percentage has declined versus weaker competition.

Defensive Trends

On the defensive side of the ball, both CSU Fullerton and CSU Northridge have made notable strides in forcing turnovers versus stronger competition. CSU Fullerton’s opponents are surrendering more turnovers than usual this season, indicating a strong push from the team to disrupt their opponents’ possession. Similarly, CSU Northridge has also seen an increase in forced turnovers from its opponents versus stronger competition.

The trend for Hawai’i is less encouraging on defense. Opponents have been shooting at an elevated rate against them versus stronger competition. UC Davis has shown improvement in forcing turnovers versus weaker competition.

Summary

In conclusion, CSU Fullerton and CSU Northridge are both making positive strides on offense. However, CSU Fullerton faces challenges with its offense rebounding percentage versus weaker competition. CSU Northridge struggles to secure second-chance opportunities on offense. Hawai’i’s defense is vulnerable to opponent shooting versus stronger competition.

Metrics Glossary

Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):

  • eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
  • TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
  • OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
  • FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.

Other Metrics:

  • Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
  • Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
  • MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
