Looking Ahead

Ivy League Teams’ Week 16 Analysis: Trends to Watch

As the Ivy League teams continue their season, several key trends have emerged from the data-driven analysis of their performances. By examining the MACD trending indicators, we can identify which teams are genuinely improving and which ones might be experiencing unsustainable momentum.

The Brown Bears’ performance is a mixed bag. Their offense has seen an improvement in shooting percentages, with a trend moving up strongly. However, their performance on the boards has declined, with their Off Reb Pct trending down strongly, indicating a significant decrease in their rebounding prowess.

Cornell’s offense has struggled, with shooting percentages trending down strongly. This is reflected in their Season Avg of 0.58, which indicates a decline in their shooting accuracy.

Dartmouth’s performance on the boards has declined, with their Off Reb Pct trending down strongly. This is reflected in their low rebounding numbers.

The Brown Bears’ defensive performance has improved significantly against their opponents, but it appears to be an error. Instead, let’s focus on Harvard’s defense, which has become more efficient, with Opp Shooting trend moving down strongly. This indicates that they are making it increasingly difficult for opponents to find the net.

Penn Quakers have also seen an improvement in their defensive performance, particularly when it comes to forcing turnovers. Their Opp Turnovers trend is moving up strongly, indicating that they are creating more opportunities for themselves through turnovers.

By examining these trends, we can gain a better understanding of which Ivy League teams are genuinely improving and which ones might be experiencing a temporary surge in performance.

Metrics Glossary

Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):

  • eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
  • TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
  • OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
  • FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.

Other Metrics:

  • Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
  • Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
  • MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
