Looking Ahead
Conference USA Week 18 Analysis
As Conference USA teams continue their season, we’ll examine key offensive and defensive trends to identify which teams are genuinely improving versus those riding unsustainable momentum.
Offensive Trends
We’ve identified two teams with notable improvement in shooting. Louisiana Tech’s trend is up strongly, boasting a season average of 0.48. Western Kentucky also shows a marked increase in its shooting trend, mirroring LA Tech’s mark at 0.48.
In contrast, UTEP’s offense has taken a hit in terms of off-rebound percentage, trending down with a season average of 0.237. This dip suggests the team struggles to secure rebounds and capitalize on opponents’ mistakes.
Defensive Trends
On the defensive side, we see significant improvements from Liberty and Jacksonville State. Notably, LA Tech is forcing more turnovers, disrupting opponents’ scoring chances.
Liberty and Jacksonville State are excelling on the glass, boasting strong uptrends in defensive rebounding percentage at 0.755. This trend indicates they effectively secure rebounds and limit opponents’ second-chance opportunities.
However, Western Kentucky struggles to contain opponents’ shooting, with an upward shift in opponent shooting averages to 0.51. This trend suggests the team allows more effective shots, placing a strain on their defensive efforts.
Metrics Glossary
Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):
- eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
- TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
- OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
- FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
Other Metrics:
- Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
- Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
- MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
