Looking Ahead
ACC Teams’ Momentum Analysis
As the ACC continues its season, we’ve identified key trends that highlight improving and worsening momentum for several teams.
Florida State’s offense is trending up on shooting percentage with a 0.51 season average, indicating more consistent scoring threats. The Seminoles are also committing fewer turnovers at a 0.145 season average, down from previous trends, suggesting better ball control and decision-making. However, the team’s rebounding prowess on the offensive end has worsened, as evidenced by its downward trend in off-rebound percentage.
Louisville’s turnover rate is trending up at a 0.161 season average, which could lead to scoring droughts and make it challenging for the team to maintain momentum.
Boston College’s defense is struggling as opponents are shooting more effectively against them with an upward trend in opponent shooting percentage at 0.49. The Eagles’ defensive prowess has also suffered due to their decreased ability to force turnovers from opponents.
Clemson’s defense has seen improvements on both ends of the court, particularly in its ability to grab a higher percentage of defensive rebounds at 0.765, up from previous trends. This trend suggests a more secure and efficient defensive presence, which compensates for the team’s opponents shooting more effectively against them with an upward trend in opponent shooting percentage at 0.48.
In contrast, some ACC teams are yet to show consistent momentum. As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see how these trends continue to shape the conference’s standings.
Metrics Glossary
Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):
- eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
- TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
- OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
- FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
Other Metrics:
- Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
- Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
- MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
