Looking Ahead
Big 12 Teams Show Varied Momentum Heading into Week 18
As we analyze the Big 12 teams, a clear picture of momentum emerges. Using relevant data and metrics, we’ve identified areas where teams are improving or declining.
Offensive Trends
Baylor’s shooting percentage has decreased this season, trending downward at 0.53 (Season Avg: 0.52, Trend: Down). This decline in efficiency from the field is a struggle for the team, indicating difficulties in finding consistency in their offense.
Kansas’ shooting trend is also concerning, with a decline in their shooting percentage (Season Avg: 0.54, Trend: Down). Unfortunately, this weakness is being exploited by their opponents.
Defensive Trends
On the defensive side of the ball, Iowa State’s struggle to contain opponents’ outside shots is evident in their data. Specifically, Baylor’s opponents have seen an increase in average shooting percentages (Opp Shooting: 0.50, Trend: Up). Similarly, Baylor’s opponents face fewer difficulties in scoring from beyond the arc.
In conclusion, these trends will be crucial to watch as we head into Week 18. Iowa State and Kansas must address their declining shooting percentages, while Baylor needs to shore up its defensive efforts against opponents’ outside shots.
Metrics Glossary
Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):
- eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
- TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
- OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
- FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
Other Metrics:
- Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
- Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
- MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
