Looking Ahead

SWAC Week 17 Analysis

As the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) continues its season, a closer look at key trends reveals some fascinating storylines. Our analysis focuses on Alabama A&M’s rebounding struggles, Alcorn State’s improved defensive efficiency, and Grambling’s increased ability to force turnovers.

On the offensive front, Alabama A&M is struggling in terms of shooting efficiency. This decline has negatively impacted their overall performance. Conversely, the team has seen a decrease in turnovers, which indicates better ball handling and decision-making on offense. Additionally, Alabama A&M is experiencing difficulties with rebounds, as they trend downward in Offense Rebound Percentage (ORP).

However, there are signs that Alcorn State has made notable progress in reducing turnovers. Specifically, Alcorn State is experiencing a decrease in turnover rate.

On the defensive side, several teams have shown significant improvements. Grambling, for instance, is forcing more turnovers from their opponents. This change could be indicative of a stronger defensive mindset and better anticipation. Grambling’s Forced Turnover Percentage has increased, which is a positive development for the team.

Alabama State has also made strides on defense, boasting an impressive Defensive Rebound Percentage (DRP). The trend in MACD momentum indicator provides a comprehensive view of these trends, representing the average difference between each team’s win/loss record and their standard score in each matchup.

Metrics Glossary

Four Factors (Dean Oliver’s framework for basketball success):

  • eFG% (Effective Field Goal %): Field goal percentage adjusted for 3-pointers being worth more (FGM + 0.5×3PM) / FGA. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.
  • TOV% (Turnover Rate): Turnovers per 100 possessions. Lower is better offensively (taking care of the ball), higher is better defensively (forcing turnovers).
  • OREB% / DREB% (Offensive/Defensive Rebound Rate): Percentage of available rebounds grabbed. Offensive rebounds create second-chance points; defensive rebounds end opponent possessions.
  • FTR (Free Throw Rate): Free throws made per field goal attempt (FTM/FGA). Measures ability to get to the line AND convert. Higher is better offensively, lower is better defensively.

Other Metrics:

  • Elo Rating: Chess-style rating system that updates based on game results and opponent strength. Higher Elo indicates stronger team.
  • Efficiency Margin: Point differential per 100 possessions (Offensive Efficiency – Defensive Efficiency). Accounts for pace of play.
  • MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence): Trend indicator comparing 12-game and 26-game exponential moving averages. Positive MACD = improving trend, Negative MACD = declining trend.
